How to Apply Mascara Step by Step (Pro Tips)

how to apply mascara

Most of us hate putting on an extra set of lashes to have a smoking hot-eye look. No one has time for a lash extension every time they want to go out.

All girls dream of having a mascara that enhances their natural lashes with just a few swipes. Honestly, that is not as unimaginable as everyone claims it to be. So, today, we'll crack the code to look effortless and chic with a few simple steps.

Once you master the art of applying mascara like a pro, you can rock any look, whether you're planning for clean-girl or glam makeup.

Find Your Perfect Mascara

For an eye makeup look to rock, you must choose the right mascara that will help you achieve the outcome you plan in your head. We've grown up thinking all mascaras do the same thing, whereas that's not true. Generally, there are three types of mascara in the market:

  • Volumizing Mascara: The most popular type of mascara that we usually find. It's supposed to make your lashes appear dense and full for your bold, glam looks.
  • Lengthening Mascara: This might be a perfect mascara for your everyday, clean-girl look. They are supposed to enhance your lash length.
  • Curling Mascara: This type of mascara is an alternative for those who require an instant lash lift. So, if you have that stubborn straight lash, get yourself a curling mascara for your makeup looks.

How to Put Mascara Like a Pro

Once you're done applying the rest of your makeup, it's time for mascara.

Step 1: Curl Your Lashes

Even if you're using curling mascara, it's always a good idea to lift the lashes with a lash curler first. This way, the product sticks to your lashes better and leaves a better and long-lasting effect. The key is to keep the eyelash curler as close to the eyelid as possible, but carefully!

Step 2: Prime Your Eye Lash

Now, this is an optional step in your everyday looks. But if you're going for a special occasion, you might want to apply an eyelash primer instead of going in with the mascara directly. Swipe the primer on your lashes once or twice, and then wait 30 seconds before applying your favorite mascara.

Step 3: Coat Upper and Lower Eyelashes

Hear this out — rotate the wand out of the bottle while opening the mascara. Then, remove the excess product on the edge of the bottle before putting anything on your eye. Believe it or not, the way you open your mascara affects the application and overall shelf life of the product.

Look up and coat your upper lashes slowly, starting from the base. Then, look down and repeat the same for lower lashes.

Step 4: Separate Your Eyelashes and Coat Again

Use an eyelash comb or a clean wand to separate the lashes and avoid a clump. Wait for the first coat to dry a little, and then go for a second coat. While most good mascaras get the job done in the second coat, you can go for as many coats as you like.

Step 5: Clean Up the Smudges

Mascara can be messy, and even the best of us can end up smudging it unintentionally. But that doesn't mean you should ruin your mood or your makeup look. If you happen to smudge it, wait for it to dry completely. Meanwhile, put your clothes or shoes on. Once it's dry and crusty, use a cotton tip to wipe out the problem area.

Pro Tips for Smooth Application

Here are some bonus tips from our side to help you achieve that flawless eye look you have always dreamed about:

  • If you're a messy applier, keep a card behind your eyelashes before coating them in mascara. This way, you won't have to worry about getting it in the places where it isn't supposed to be.
  • Don't just mascara on the lower side of the lashes only. Applying a coat above them can also help achieve a bold eye look.
  • If you want your eyelashes to appear fuller without applying falsies, dab a little translucent powder between the coats.
  • Sometimes, the small hair on your eyelid can be really hard to reach with your wand. To cover them in mascara properly, hold the mascara wand vertically.
